Before the internet, it was necessary for people to physically assemble to create a crowd. However, with the introduction of the internet, a new form of crowd has become available, the virtual crowd, where people associate around a cause, interest, idea, hobby etc rather than at a physical location. Crowdsourcing attempts to leverage the power of these virtual crowds.
